TEHRAN (ECOIDEAL)- Iran has located 3 sites for the construction of geothermal power plants and is building the first such facility in the Northwestern province of Ardabil.
"The 5-MW geothermal power plant under construction in Meshkinshahr was designed several years ago and its turbine is being installed," Shahriar Bozorgmehri, the head of the Renewable Energy Department of Niroo Research Institute, said on Sunday.
He explained that Iranian experts have identified three proper sites, including Meshkinshahr, Damavand and Sistan and Balouchestan, for the construction of geothermal power plants.
Iran has in recent years increased efforts to use renewable energies to produce electricity instead of fossil fuel.
In a relevant development in March, Iran and France cooperated in building and assembling two new solar power plants in Tehran with the capacity of producing 17MW of electricity.
"A 10-MW solar power plant was built in Shamsabad and another 7-MW power plant in Damavand as a result of cooperation between an Iranian company and a French firm," Head of Power Distribution Company of Tehran Haji Reza Teimouri said.
He added that the power plants will soon launch operation in the presence of the Iranian officials.
