TEHRAN (ecoideal)- Iranian First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri and United Nations Under-Secretary General Shamshad Akhtar in a meeting in Sochi, Russia, on Friday discussed bilateral relations and also Islamic Republic's membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
Jahangiri, who is in Sochi to attend an international meeting in the Russian city, and Akhtar, who is also Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), reiterated the advantages of Iran's membership in the SCO.
Jahangiri is slated to address the SCO on its capacities for developing regional cooperation and expound on Iran’s potentials in the economic, scientific and technical areas, specially in the post-nuclear deal era.
SCO is an intergovernmental organization founded by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in 2001 in a bid to promote multilateral cooperation in the fields of security, economy and culture.
Iran, Mongolia, Afghanistan and Belarus have joined the entity as observer members.
Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan and India are current members of SCO.
