TEHRAN (ecoideal)- The number of foreign tourists visiting Yazd Province increased by more than one third in the first nine months of the current Iranian year (stated March 22), officials announced.
"The number of foreign tourists visiting Yazd province hit 96,000 in the first nine months of the current year showing a 34 percent rise," the acting director of Tourism Department in Iran Cultural Heritage Handicrafts and Tourism Organization, Mohammad Reza Nasiri said on Thursday.
He noted that the same period last year was 73,000, adding, "The majority of the tourists were from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, China and The Netherlands."
Nasiri said that registering the city of Yazd on the world Heritage List of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) this year certainly played a big role in the growth of he number of foreign tourists who chose to visit Yazd.
"It is estimated that some 140,000 tourists visit Yazd by the end of this year," he said.
UNESCO put the name of Yazd on World Heritage List during its 41st session on July 2-12 in Krakow, Poland.
